Design‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ at the Speed of Thought: My Honest Review of Stencil Creative bottleneck is a familiar concept to everyone who writes blogs, manages social media, or operates a small business. The problem is, you come up with a creative idea, but end up spending the next 45 minutes figuring out the image size, 20 minutes looking for a royalty-free photo, and then spend 10 minutes on tweaking the text alignment. When you finally get it done, the initial spark of creativity has long vanished. I have been through practically all the design software available on the market, by going deep into the power software as well as using only the simple apps on my mobile device. To be sure whether the tool lives up to its claim of being the fastest designing tool, I spent a few weeks in mobile interaction with Stencil (formerly Share as Image). Here is my honest and practical opinion on Stencil. What Exactly is Stencil? It seems that Stencil is not merely trying to be a Photoshop alternative. It might not even be aiming at becoming a Canva competitor in the traditional sense. The main concern of Stencil is the creation of a lot of images fast. It is a simplified, online editor that targets removing the difficulties marketers face working with social media. The whole interface is implemented with speed in mind, which means less clicks are required to go from a blank canvas to a finished and published image. The Features That Actually Save Time Most applications utter the word "productivity" quite often, but the reality is that Stencil truly integrates it into the work process. These are the features that impressed me during the demo:

  1. The Browser Extension (The Secret Weapon) This one is definitely the feature done best by Stencil. You can have a Chrome or Firefox extension installed, and it will allow you to right-click any photo on any webpage and open that photo in the Stencil editor immediately. Even more, something that with running the text of a blog post, you can highlight the phrases in the text, right-click it, and Stencil will line this text up as a quote graphic automatically.
  2. Ridiculous Library of Assets The drastic number of high-quality photos available made me amazed. Through Stencil, you gain direct access to huge libraries like Unsplash and Pexels, so you can freely pick from over 5 million images. However, what matters the most is the 3 million+ icons and graphics. You don't have to waste your time uploading icons, just search for "arrow" or "shopping cart" and drag the icon in. Everything is royalty-free and you can use it for commercial purposes.
  3. Instant Social Previews and Resizing Stencil does your "mathematics". It has more than 140 presets for each social media that you can think of. Do you want to find out how your Instagram post would look as a Facebook ad or a Pinterest pin? Simply select the "Resize" option and it changes instantly. The User Experience: Minimalism Done Right You will hardly find one more neat interface than this one. In the center is where you will find your canvas, on the left - your asset library, and on the right - your styling tools. There are no hidden menus or complicated layers to handle. One of the elements I’ve been frequently using lately is the "Quotes" library. Basically, if you can’t think of any content, Stencil provides a database of more than 100,000 quotes within the app itself. You search by theme (e.g., "Motivation" or "Marketing"), select one, and the image with elegant typography is done automatically. It basically lets you finish a ten-minute design work for ten seconds. What I Loved: The Pros Unrivaled Speed: It is much quicker to work with than Canva or VistaCreate because there are fewer distractions and the toolset is more focused. Your Branding is Always Safe: With a separate "favs" section where you can keep your logos and brand colors, uploading is only needed once for each and all are just a click away. Direct Sharing: It's also possible to publish your designs directly to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or Pinterest—and even send them to your phone via SMS. WordPress Integration: For bloggers, their WordPress add-on is a big help that makes the creation of featured images a breeze and that too without having to leave your "Add New Post" screen.

The Reality Check: The Cons It is not a Complex Design Tool: If you require functionalities such as advanced photo retouching, intricate vector layering, or composing multi-page documents like eBooks, Stencil is not your tool. Static Images Only: At present, Stencil doesn't come with the features that allow video editing or heavy animations. It caters only to the production of high-quality static graphics.

The Verdict: Who is Stencil For? For the content creator who is always on the move , Stencil might be just the right tool. Imagine you are a solo-preneur, virtual assistant, or blogger who has to post three times daily on five different platforms. This tool will be a real time saver for you on a weekly basis. It's not about someone who'd relish spending hours on "designing." It's more about the person who's keen on getting their design finished in order to go back to managing their business. Of all the design tools available, this one is the microwave—fast, efficient, and the quality might even surprise ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌you.
